Discovering Myself

Rene Magritte’s Son of man inspired my collage in multiple ways such as the surrealism aspect and the lack of personal identity. Having an absent face brings uncomfortable feelings to the viewer and that is something I truly wanted to capture. The overall feeling of not knowing who you are is possibly the scariest thing. Surrealism aided me in representing my concerns through a collection of symbolic photographs.

Macabre Interests
Ink on Paper
15.24 cm X 22.86 cm
Print 15/16
September 2014
My intention for this block print was to show how alluring death can be to humans. Obsessions with death are easy to form, whether it is out of fear or fascination. For several years now I have learned to love everything morbid and related to death which is why I chose to portray a human flirting with death. Käthe Kollwitz and German expressionism were my main inspiration because of the art style and dark themes based around daily life.

Priest

Being from Hispanic background culture is a major part of my every day life. From a young age children are told detailed stories of Aztecs and Mayans who preformed sacrifices to please the gods. Several movies and paintings portray high priests as powerful, regal members of their society. My inspiration was my culture to create a character who looks elegant and preforms human sacrifices for the well-being of his people.

Human Misconception
Mixed Media/ Found Object
November 2014
Humans are said to be the only animals to reason which occasionally makes us forget what we are. Other animals don't keep track of time as humans do, as a species we are obsessed with time. I wanted to show how humans are animals on an anatomical level despite of how much more "civilized" we are than other animals. Frida Kahlo and local artist Rita Maria were my inspirations for this piece, focusing on animals such as deer and crows as well the the beauty of nature.

Silent Scream
Acrylic on Canvas

December 2014
This self-portrait was meant to resemble Francis Bacon’s Figure with Meat and Screaming Pope. These connections are shown through the outfit, background and hanging animal carcasses that are similar to the original paintings. My main idea was to show that sounds are not needed to feel an emotion, such as screaming. This symbolizes my inability to show emotion verbally although they are more easily shown through my actions. Another goal was to show my love for the macabre and obscure by using Francis Bacon as inspiration.

Frida Kahlo was the primary form of inspiration for this tryptic, her use of surrealism and self portraits are main components I focused on. I wanted to show how I view myself in the first panel (left), relatively dark and scarred but radiant none the less. The second panel (middle) is meant to represent how I want to contribute something to the city before I die. As for the last panel (right) it is meant to represent how the city provided me an education which I dearly appreciate.

Industrial vs Organic
Chicken Wire, Fake bird and butterflies, hair
50.8 cm X 43.18 cm X 25.4 cm
February 2015
My inspiration for this piece was industrialized culture and how it has changed human life. The human buste represents how we have changed to become a part of a new technological world. The nest is green to resemble organic materials birds use to build homes. The bird and butterflies symbolize our inner nature escaping from within and add contrast to the grey of the wire. Inside the nest are calibration spheres to represent eggs and how far industry has gone to where nothing is natural anymore.

Hode Self Destruction

Surrealism along with Francis Bacon inspire most of my work, including this self portrait. The purpose of this self portrait was to demonstrate the physical wounds I've inflicted on myself from a young age. This no longer happens but I still carry the scars on my skin. The pendant and face paint represent a suppressed memory of the last argument I had with my father. My goal was to paint a face that seemed hurt yet content with how it looks.

Sacred Vessel
acrylic on clay, found object
April 2015
The concept of having a close family and healthy children is sacred in Mexican culture. The woman is meant to keep the household strong and connected while still providing for her family. Men on the other hand provide for the family and are responsible for passing on their last name. The small glass vial represents the woman's secret pain and the white candle represents a light to lead the way through darkness.
